Electrical Safety Tools That Keep You OSHA Compliant

Doug Minear · C-10 Contractor · Stationary Engineer · 8 min read

OSHA 1910.333 covers electrical safety-related work practices. It's the standard that gets cited when something goes wrong, and it's the one that specifies when insulated tools are required and what constitutes adequate protection for energized work.

When Insulated Tools Are Required

1910.333(c)(2): employees shall use insulated tools or handling equipment when working near exposed energized conductors or circuit parts. "Near" has a specific definition tied to your voltage level and approach boundaries. Know the boundaries. The standard isn't ambiguous.

The 1000V Insulated Kit

For work near energized circuits under 1000V — which is the vast majority of commercial electrical work — IEC 60900 rated tools are the compliant choice. The ACES 14-piece kit meets this standard. Each tool is individually tested to 10,000V and rated for 1000V use.

Voltage Testing Protocol

Before work on any circuit: test with NCV tester, test tester on known live source, test circuit again. This isn't extra caution — it's the protocol that eliminates the most common failure mode (assuming a circuit is de-energized when it isn't). Carry two testers. Cross-verify.

"OSHA compliance is the minimum. The protocol should exceed the minimum, because the minimum was written around what failed."

LOTO — Lockout/Tagout

1910.147 covers lockout/tagout procedures. Know your employer's LOTO program. Use your own lock. Never rely on another person's lock to protect you. The personal lock is non-negotiable — if your lock isn't on it, your protection isn't on it.
